Aperol Spritz evolved gradually, starting in the 19th century when Austrian soldiers in the Veneto region diluted strong Italian wines with soda, giving rise to the term "spritz". The key moment came in 1919 in Padua, where the Barbieri brothers, after years of experimenting with herbs and oranges, introduced a brilliantly orange liqueur called Aperol. In the 1950s, both of these traditions merged with Italian Prosecco into one of the world's most popular summer cocktails.
