This famous cocktail was born around 1900 in Havana after the Spanish-American War, when Cuba gained independence. According to legend, an American captain at a local bar had the novelty of the time — American Coca-Cola — poured into Cuban rum, and refreshed it all with a squeeze of fresh lime. The drink was such a hit with the soldiers present that they began toasting to the liberated island with the war cry "¡Por Cuba libre!". To this day, fresh lime juice remains the key detail that distinguishes a true Cuba Libre from a mere rum and cola.
