Gin and tonic was born in the first half of the 19th century in India as a brilliant medical invention by British soldiers. They were fighting malaria at the time and had to take quinine, which was so unbearably bitter that they started mixing it with water, sugar and lime. To further improve the taste of this medicinal "tonic", they added their regular rations of British gin. What started as an emergency remedy against a tropical disease gradually became one of the most popular bar cocktails in the world.
